Some people have the misunderstanding that alcohol is not a drug and that it is not very harmful to the body. This is not true. Alcohol is a drug and it is very harmful to your body. Alcohol addictions are exactly as bad and sometimes even worse than drug addictions. Since it is easier for the common person to get his hands on alcohol rather than normal drugs.

When you have someone that is addicted to alcohol things can get pretty ugly. Alcohol drug treatment is a must to get a person off of their addiction to alcohol. Alcohol drug treatment is the solution to handling a person’s problem with being addicted to alcohol.

A person that is addicted to alcohol will mostly likely not have the realization on their own that they need help and that they need to go to a drug rehabilitation center. It will take work and persuasion from a friend or family member to get the addict to attend one of these centers. This work and persuasion is worthwhile, because after the addict has done a drug rehabilitation he will be free of his addiction and can have his life back.

People who are addicted to alcohol made a wrong decision to even start drinking. But what is done is done. There is no undoing the action. But there is a way to fix what was done and that is by receiving alcohol drug treatment. Everything and anything in this world can he handled and fixed. It is just a matter of willingness. How willing are you to help someone handle his or her problems and how willing is that person to really try and change for the better.

One thing that can happen is that once an addict decides to get clean and do a drug rehabilitation program he can become impatient to get done with the program. Inpatient drug rehab is the way to fully overcome and handle an addiction. Handling an addiction and deciding to go to rehab is a process that takes patience and time. The addict needs to realize that it will take a little bit to fully be over alcohol. It is not something that happens overnight. When an addict starts at a drug rehabilitation program it is best if he has a family member or friend visit him often to make sure that he is doing ok and getting through the program successfully.

The addict who is going through substance abuse will not be able to understand that he is truly suffering from a problem. All that he cares about is that he gets daily dose of substance by hook or by crook. The temporary pleasure that he gets from substance is enough to make him feel better from all the stress and problems that he is going through in his life.

When an addict is recommended to join a drug rehab center, he may go through numerous stages of denial before he admits that he is ruining his life because of drug or alcohol abuse. Here are the stages of denial that a addicts goes through:

Stage 1

The addict feels that he is consuming a very low amount of drugs/alcohol and he is not addicted to it. He underestimates the seriousness of the addiction problem he is suffering from. In most situations, it has been observed that the addict lacks knowledge about the disease he is or he may suffer from due to addiction.

Stage 2

The addict starts making use of excuses or come up with stories to justify his addiction. During this stage of denial, the addict may say sentences like “If you had similar problems like mine, even you would have taken up drugs”

Stage 3

When the family members and close ones of the addict becomes do not take the excuses made by the addict seriously, he can become more aggressive or violent or defensive by blaming others for his addiction instead of accepting taking the responsibility of addiction on himself. For instance, if the marriage of an alcoholic is on the verge of separation due to his drinking habits, he may blame his wife for the problem.

The only way to overcome the stages of denial is intervention by seeking assistance from an addiction treatment center. A drug rehab or alcohol rehab center will do a good job in freeing the habits of addiction and restoring his normal life.

At the University of Washington, an experiment was conducted to find out how drinking at young age could lead to alcohol addiction and influence decision-making abilities negatively later in life. Here is the experiment which was conducted in a time span of 20 days:

Researchers injected gelatin shots of alcohol in a group of young aged rats whereas another group of rats belonging to the same age group were treated with nonalcoholic treats.

After few weeks when the young rats became adult, the rats were given two choices of food after performing respective activity. A lever was provided which if pushed, it threw out two sugary treats and there was another level which when pushed allowed the rats to access four yummy pellets or no food.

The rats that were given gelatin shots of alcohol could not make a rational decision and ended up pushing the lever that provided them with no food.

The rats that were given nonalcoholic treats consistently pushed the lever that gave them access to food.

Since the experiments were carried out to learn the affects of alcohol on human teens and adolescents, it was concluded that early abuse of alcohol in life can lead to bad decisions in life when they attain adulthood.

The area present in the brain that is responsible for decision-making keeps on developing during adolescence to adult age. This is the reason why alcohol consumption at young age can influence the ability to make constructive decision later in life. The brain of a teen can get influenced permanently due to consumption of alcohol.

Dr. Karen Norber who had carried out the experiment advised that if the frequency and intensity of alcohol consumption during the young age can lead to long-term effects when they drink alcohol in their adulthood.

When you come to know that your loved one is addicted to alcohol, you should suggest him to undergo treatment at alcohol rehab center. Very few people will be to quit their addiction to alcohol on their own. The participation of the family in the treatment process will surely result in successful treatment.

The family members should provide complete support to the addict during the treatment process. If your loved one is addicted to alcohol, you should not try to hide it but seek immediate help for treatment. If the addict does not get his dose of alcohol easily, he can turn violent and create ruckus at home and there will be no peace left. In such a situation, you will not able hide his addiction from the public.

During the treatment, the addict should not feel lonely. Hence, the involvement of the family members is important so that they can provide the addict with the much needed love and affection.

The treatment procedure followed for an individual can be different to other addicts. Individual counseling will help in determining why he took up alcohol addiction. After a certain point in individual counseling, the addict can be suggested to go for family counseling. During the family counseling, both the addict and the family members get opportunity to share and express their thoughts and concerns.

Depending on the level of addiction, the addict may be required to continue his treatment at the alcohol rehab center for a period of time. This way the addict can remain detached from his addiction without experience much problem during the withdrawal stage. After the treatment is over, the patient should remain in an aftercare program. Even though the addict is tempted to have alcohol, he will abstain from it because of the time he spent at the aftercare program.

Alcoholism can be cured.

Consumption of alcohol in large quantities can lead to various kinds of illness to heart, liver, kidney and nervous system in people across all ages and gender. If you are a pregnant woman, alcohol consumption can have profound effect on you and your unborn child. What happens is that when a mother consumes alcohol, the unborn child is also exposed to alcohol.

Exposure to alcohol can cause serious health complication to the fetus. Drinking alcohol during the first few weeks of pregnancy can turn to be very fatal to the fetus. Damage to the baby can be in the form of a physical problem, mental instability, behavioral problems, inability to learn, etc. Most of these complications can last throughout the life.

When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the alcohol reaches the baby in the same level of concentration. In other words, if a pregnant woman remains drunk for couple of hours, the unborn baby will also remain intoxicated for three to four days.

The brain of the unborn baby is one of the organs that is most affected when the mother consumes alcohol. During pregnancy, the brain develops at a steady pace. So, if the mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy, it can cause severe damage to the baby’s brain and hamper its development.

A recent research has shown that over 2,000 new born babies every year suffer from effects that are caused due to prenatal alcohol exposure. Alcohol intake during pregnancy causes FASD. According to Wikipedia, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders describes a continuum of permanent birth defects caused by maternal consumption of alcohol during pregnancy, which includes, but is not limited to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).

The risk of miscarriage is increased due to alcohol consumption. There is also risk of stillbirth and malformation to the vital organs of the baby such as the heart and brain. Hence, pregnant women should make every effort to control their need for drinking alcohol. This will help the mother and her unborn baby to remain healthy during pregnancy and post pregnancy.

Since decades, twelve-step program is considered to be one of the most effective tools in treating addictions such as drug addiction and alcohol addiction. The program was established by Alcoholics Anonymous during the 1930s.

Here are the points that are involved in the twelve-step program:

We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.

Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

The twelve-step program helps the addict in many ways like making him realize that he is going through substance addiction problem, how to become considerate and develop self-control, helping others in knowing and practicing the program, etc. The twelve-step program can be performed in both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation centers. After recovering from the addiction through the twelve-step program, the patient becomes confident in facing the challenges of the life.

Recently, people are finding that the 12 steps are not that effective. If you are looking for a non 12 step rehab that will help you overcome your addiction, than give us a call.

There are a lot of bad effects that result from becoming addicted to alcohol. The problem is that people that used to not be addicts to alcohol didn’t have enough data about the bad effects that would result, but now they are having a terrible time and wishing that they never even got started with alcohol. There are lots of alcohol addicts that don’t have faith in alcohol treatment or in treatment programs. Let me give you some idea of what bad effects result from being an alcoholic.

Bad effects from using alcohol include, not remembering conversations or commitments, blacking out, having health problems or getting injuries, losing interest in activities that you were formerly interested in, having legal problems, relationship issues and finance situations. These are just some of the most common bad effects; there are many more things that can happen from drinking excess amounts of alcohol.

Lets go into more detail of what the bad effects really cause in a person’s life. For example lets use the name Joe, Joe is a married man in his late thirties he has two kids, a nice house and his most treasured item is his yellow Porsche. Joe works at a construction company; he is part owner of the company. Joe starts having some trouble at work with his co-partner about new building sites, he starts getting really stressed out and starts going to bars at night and drinking the night away. Alcoholic drink after alcoholic drink. This starts to become his habit. Everyday after work he now goes to the bar and just drinks, drinks, drinks. He starts avoiding his wife and starting little fights with her. His kids ask him to come to their football game and he yells at them and says that he has more important things to do. He is now really starting to mess up his life. His job is going bad, he is missing making payments on the house, since he is using so much money for alcohol, his wife is completely upset with him and to top it off he crashed his Porsche into a brick building because he was driving while drunk. Joe is now completely addicted to alcohol and just spends his days fighting with his partner and his night drinking his sorrows away. Little does he know that the drinking is what made his life so miserable in the first place.
Alcohol addiction can be handled in different ways. Some people realize that they have an addiction and on their own they stop drinking and just decide to not drink anymore. This method works but it isn’t necessarily the easiest. One method to cure alcohol addiction, that is very common, is getting alcohol addiction treatment. There are all sorts of establishments and programs that help with alcoholism treatment.

Part of the thing that is done at an alcohol addiction treatment center is alcohol detox. Alcohol detox is where the alcohol is removed from the patient’s body. It is removed by abstinence from alcohol, changing your diet and other things.

Rising over alcohol addiction is not an easy thing to do. It is actually very hard for people who are addicted to alcohol to get sober and stay sober. Since alcohol addiction is a tough thing to handle, alcohol addiction treatment centers are a good idea. These centers are good because it puts the addict into a safe and calm environment where there is also no way of getting alcohol.

If an addict decides to fight the addiction at home, it might be harder since there might be things in the environment that are pressuring or hard for him to bear, so he will be inclined to drink again. Also there might still be alcohol in his house so the alcohol being there will be tempting and he might just start drinking again.

Treatment centers are a good way for the addict to get some space and have a change of pace. Work, family and life in general can be very overwhelming and drinking might be the addict’s only solution to rising above everything. But drinking just makes things worse in the long–run. These alcohol treatment centers give the addict some peace and quiet and are a good environment for getting and staying sober.

One problem that alcohol addicts have is that they lose hope in being able to ever get and stay sober. They have sunk so far down into their alcohol addiction, that they don’t have any faith in changing. They think that for the rest of their lives they will be addicted to alcohol and that they will be miserable. But the truth is, that this is something that can be done against alcohol addiction. It is not too late.

An important thing in alcoholism treatment is having people around that are going to be supportive and helpful. People that wont lead the alcohol addict to drink again. Family and friends need to be supportive of the addict and need to help him change. It is hard for a hardcore alcohol addict to change on his own. He needs as much support and encouragement as he can get.

People who are addicted to alcohol are not happy people. They are struggling with all kinds of problems and just need help. They need people to look out for them and people that will get them back onto the right track.

If you are an alcohol addict yourself, or if you are just trying to help out someone who is an addict, either way just remember that there is hope. Don’t give up.

Call 1-800-391-4893 to find an alcohol drug treatment program today.
